Many a complaint are laid at the feet of this ageing icon, arguably that its dirty, miserable and courts the vagrants and undesirables that convene, particularly in railway station.Its worth a looksie just to bear witness to 750,000 people travelling on 120 trains per hour. It is the largest underground station in Europe, positioned beneath the largest underground shopping centre in the world. well,there has always been excitement with regard to railway stations,and it so with this major commuter train hub. you are in the absolute geographical centre of Paris. Probably when you emerge from underground the rain will have stopped and you can go back to exploring the ancient Paris. You will have a fanscinating time of window shopping (the French call it "leche vitrine" or window licking), or actual money-spending shopping. Next time you are in Paris and it is raining (that does happen in Paris every once in a while), head to Les Halles. That part of Les Halles that is seen above ground is a modern, glass and steel sculpture of geometric shapes, with curves, arches, and sharp angles, but you have to go underground to discover the maze of modern shops and stores. Built upon an enormous old market place, where farmers and producers brought their crops and foods to sell to retailers in Paris, Les Halles is an entire shopping complex, most of which is found undergroud. Les Halles in the middle of Paris is a good example. The French are a very modern, technically advanced people (in many areas surpassing what we know in the USA), however, and among the ancient monuments of Paris there is a thriving modern culture.
