![]() ![]() My Fusion Drive actually went bad so was causing problems. I’m surprised I don’t see people talk about OpenCore more in the comments on this sub. ![]() Without it I would’ve had to buy a raspberry pi or something. I am personally really happy I was able to use it for something, and something very useful to me. Not trying to turn anyone away from it, just warning that if you don’t wanna experiment maybe isn’t meant for you! It doesn’t happen a lot, and hasn’t happened lately so still not too worried. Maybe that would solve my issues I have with the screen. Apparently you can add and replace some hardware as well, but I didn’t need to for it to work. ![]() I only did this because the computer was otherwise garbage. This may be patchable, but it gets the job done so I don’t bother messing with it.Īlso, I know a thing or two about how to work computers, especially Macs so I didn’t have a hard time troubleshooting. I thinks it’s something about the graphics, but it runs a bit slow (old computer duh) and the screen bugs out whenever I run certain things. Received the black screen with a “?”, but I figured it out eventually. Runs decently well, must warn it was not an easy process as the installation failed a couple of times. It's in mint condition except could use a battery but the keyboard backlighting and display are phenomenally bright still and everything runs superb!Cheers!Ĭan confirm, am running Monterey on an early 2008 iMac. I buy and sell Max and he bought this from me when it was a year old and we're friends so I just got it back from him a week ago for free for setting up his new 2021 14" LOL. It's a quad-core i7 2.6 with 16GB ram and updated SSD to 512GB which was the MAX it could go on everything for this mid 2012) so it's well worth using open-core on for sure! Funny thing is, I sold it to the person I just got it back from years ago. (I didn't want Ventura on it because it takes a little more "oompf" than Monterey to run smooth) but Monterey runs smooth as silk on it. I used Opencore to upgrade the OS to Monterey. I have a 2012 15" Retina with dual GPU (stock and a 1GB Nvidia GeForce 650, which hasn't failed like many did, knock on wood) and while it technically has the specs to run Monterey (and even Ventura) it won't technically upgrade past Catalina within Apple's own software update. The installation process for opencore is VERY easy surprisingly so and especially if you have another mac at your disposal.Great reminder post! Also, I am not affiliated with dortania or any of the OCLP team I am just a Mac and retro computing enthusiast that has had great success using their software to breathe life back into my old Mac hardware without having to resort to installing Windows or Linux on it. I just wanted to make the folks in this subreddit aware that you have options when deciding what to do with your old, non-upgradable Mac hardware. If you're tech savvy enough to know how to reinstall macOS on your Mac then you have enough tech ability to run OCLP and upgrade to that nu nu. Here is a link to the official GitHub for OCLP:Īnd here is a link to the getting started guide:Īnd for the ease of research, here is a link to the supported models page with any caveats: After OCLP I can use all of these features on my iMac. For example, before running OCLP on my 2017 iMac, I could run 13.1 fine, but I did not have the new features like the iMac being an AirDrop target or being able to use Universal Control. In addition to allowing you to install unsupported versions of macOS on old hardware, it will also allow you to enable blocked features on newer systems. I am writing this post from a 2014 MacBook Air running macOS 13.1. ![]() Open Core Legacy Patcher will allow you to install macOS Ventura (and earlier versions) on even extremely old systems. That's where Open Core Legacy Patcher comes in! These old Mac computers are still very viable machines once you get around Apple's planned obsolescence. I have noticed a lot of posts about "What should I do with my old Mac" so I wanted to make a new thread about it. Hey everybody, not much of a Redditor, but been trying to get involved lately. ![]()
