![]() ![]() Enjoy free online English audiobook “East of Eden”, the most ambitious novel by John Steinbeck. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families-the Trasks and the Hamiltons-whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. Brutally realistic-and sometimes fatalistic-about people’s ability to harm themselves and those around them, it is also a celebration of perseverance, enduring love, and the noble yearning to better oneself. A brilliant novel of ideas, East of Eden is far-reaching in its effort to explicate the most fundamental trials of mankind. The title, East of Eden, was chosen by Steinbeck from Genesis, Chapter 4, verse 16: "And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the Land of Nod, on the east of Eden". Later, after giving birth to twin boys, she shoots Adam and leaves him to return to her former profession… Steinbeck's inspiration for the novel comes from the fourth chapter of Genesis, verses one through sixteen, which recounts the story of Cain and Abel. Adam eventually marries Cathy Ames, an evil, manipulative, and beautiful prostitute she betrays him, joining Charles on the very night of their wedding. Spanning the period between the American Civil War and the end of World War I, the novel highlights the conflicts of two generations of brothers, the first being the kind, gentle Adam Trask and his wild brother Charles. East of Eden, John Steinbeck’s passionate and exhilarating epic, re-creates the seminal stories of Genesis through the intertwined lives of two American families.
